7.Laura mulvey essay

Laura Mulvey essay

Laura Mulvey’s theory applies to the music videos “Dirty” and “Do it Like a Dude” because both videos invite the audience to view the artists as objects of desire.  This is done through the camera shots and angles used, the fact the video is presented in a voyeuristic way to the audience, and the way the artist interacts with others in the video.

In Christina Aguilera’s video of “Dirty” the use of the camera invites sexual gaze by focusing on specific parts of Christina Aguilera’s body. This is done to attract the men to watch the video and maybe even watch it again afterwards. An example of this is when she is showing hey belly and all the men are trying to reach to it. In my opinion I think what she is doing is clever but it is also inappropriate and unneeded.

The audience views this video in a voyeuristic way because the attention is always on her. she is always the one standing out so if you are watching it you are almost being forced to watch always what she is doing. For example when she is sitting above the men and the men are scrambling for her she is the center of attention and the audiences eyes are on her. In my opinion this is a good way together the attention of the viewers and make them watch what you want them to watch

The actors interact in a way that results in the female being looked at as an object of desire. This occurs when the male actors are fighting and scrambling over her. The actors are fighting in a ring and there are massive scrambles to reach Christina who is above them. An example of this is when Christina is sitting above all the men and they are fighting to try to reach her. In my opinion it is clever as it puts the attention on her and makes her look desirable.

In Jesse J’s video of “Do it Like a Dude” the use of the camera invites sexual gaze by shooting Jesse J in a crouched position witch is quite sexually appealing. The position she is nearly always in attracts men because it is sexually appealing and makes them watch the music video. An example of this is when she is in a room on her own and she is in this position rubbing her thighs. In my opinion this should not be involved in the music video because a lot of young girls and boys watch Jesse J’s music videos and this is a bad influence on them.

The audience views this video in a voyeuristic way because she is grabbing the camera and she is forcing them to look at her face and listen to the music instead of her body. she grabs the camera herself so the audience are focusing 100% on her. This is a method she has used to make the audience listen to her and not necessarily just look at her

The actors interact in a way that results in the female being looked at as an object of desire. This occurs when the actors are dancing around her. She is being danced around and she is wearing bright colors and everyone else is wearing dull colors making her stand out. For example when Jesse J is dancing at the beginning of the video she is wearing orange and the people around her are wearing dark green grey and navy making her stand out. in my opinion this is very clever as it draws the attention to her.

In many rap videos women have no identity except as sexual playthings and "eye candy"

In many rap videos women have no identity except as sexual playthings and "eye candy"

I agree with the fact that In many rap videos women have no identity except as sexual playthings and "eye candy" because in basically every single music video (especially in the hip hop genre) there are half naked women dancing and wearing ridiculous outfits showing their boobs and bum. They're are always wrapped around the finger of the artist and the artist can make them do whatever they want them to do. The men are basically using the women as toys there is never any talking between the men and women which shows that they are just used. A example is Robin Thickes Blurred Lines.

Since 'The Thong Song' the music industry have found it acceptable to take advantage of women in their videos and the bar is ever being raised higher as to what limits they can go to exploiting these women no one knows who is responsible to stop the explicit content in these videos getting worse and worse.

Most of the successful hip hop videos are the ones that contain the half naked women. This is because even if the artists music is bad people watch the music videos just for the women in it as it gives pleasure to them.  This shows the way that music but in particular hip hop is going it is more based on the women and not on the music.

So much money is being made from this industry just because of men using women as 'playthings or eyecandy' the men use these videos for their pleasure because they like looking at the women.

The women have absolutely no identity, this is not what the men care about they are more interested in using them to look at and have sex with at the click of their finger which is not how it really is so is putting a bad influence on young people.

Stereotypes presentation from charliejcrosbie

In my presentation i think that we represented the stereotypes well and gave detail about the video we showed this through answering questions and showing pictures.  to make the presentation better we could have answered the questions in more depth and used more images.

www: we covered all the questions well
          used good images
understood the link between the video and sterotypes

EBI: used more images
answered the questions in more depth

Men Stereotype hip hop homework

I do agree with the fact that rap/hip hop videos only show a small percentage of manhood, these videos try to represent men to be rich with lots of women and quite strong, and anyone who does not fit up to these requirements they are seen as a wimp or are not man enough to have what other men have.

These videos only relate to a small amount of men and most men don't have or are anything like the men in the videos but because there are so many of these videos they feel that it is what they should be doing and if they dont they are wimps or cowards, they want to be like the people in these videos .

They do represent a real man as someone with lots of money, woman and expensive jewelry but in some circumstances this is true, some women do want men for their money. but this is not ture for 'ordinary' people.

the men in these videos are very select and often are basically the same no matter who it actually is in the video  because this is what people are interested in it if was a ordinary person everyone would relate to it and it would be extremely boring.

Home Work 11/9/13

Connotation and Denotation

1) Connotation = Iron Maiden written in bold writing, Misty spooky background, skulls and devils, fire and lightning

Denotation= monsters and devil relate to mean bad things, darkness relate to rock / heavy metal music the overall cover makes the song feel as it is going to be very loud

2) Connotation = man in jeans with white t shirt and cap in his pocket, there is a red and white striped background with blue writing at the top

Denotation = man wearing t shirt and jeans were quite cool in the 80's in america so you can tell it was quite mainstream

3) Connotation = naked woman with a black leather glove a white background

Denotation = it is very plane but the glove is standing out from the plane so it looks different which may relate to the songs being different or new

4) Connotation = we can see a black background with the band members in front of and light coming form below

Denotation = the light makes them look very important as though they are one of a kind

5) Connotation = black background with strings

Denotation= the strings look like a life support machine with the black backgound making it stand out

6) Connotation = two men shaking hands in what looks like a place where planes are kept and it looks very hot ,one man is on fire
Denotation= men could be agreeing on a deal but the man on fire could be a criminal or is going to lie to the other man with the deal about the planes or whatever it is around them

7) Connotation = a large pillar in the middle of rocky terrain with four men standing around it

Denotation = the pillar in the middle of nowhere could be saying that they're different and not mainstream not a lot of people know about them

8) Connotation= pink and white diagonal line with faint words

Denotation = very mainstream and the letters blending in may represent the band being quite normal

9) Connotation= five men one girl black and white back ground with red letters

Denotation= girl is standing out from the men and back and white shows diversion between men and women

10) Connotation= a man with a dark background

Denotation= he looks prepared and calm like he's about to do some thing important

Saturday:

After coming back from football training, I watched a match on sky and then went to my friends house where we played on the xbox and watched another football match.

I watched tv until half 10.

Sunday:

Before my football match I used facebook to talk to some people in my team about the match.

Then after it I met my friend at Bromley where I used my phone to look at the football news

And watched tv until 10.
